Phaenomena (Johns Hopkins New Translations from Antiquity)

The Early History of Heaven

When we think of "heaven," we generally conjure up positive, blissful images. Heaven is, after all, where God is and where good people go after death to receive their reward. But how and why did Western cultures come to imagine the heavenly realm in such terms? Why is heaven usually thought to be "up there," far beyond the visible sky? And what is the source of the idea that the post mortem abode of the righteous is in this heavenly realm with God?

Seeking to discover the roots of these familiar notions, this volume traces the backgrounds, origin, and development of early Jewish and Christian speculation about the heavenly realm -- where it is, what it looks like, and who its inhabitants are. Whereas this ascent of Europe was spurred by the Industrial Revolution, it was helped by the exploitation and plunder of other regions and societies through imperialism, colonialism and slave trade, in addition to the unfair rules of the game dictated by the powerful and conquering nations. It would be unwise to think that the history has reached its conclusion. The proponents and celebrants of "The End of History" (Francis Fukuyama and the Neocon crowd) must be having second thoughts by now. The educational curricula of the countries throughout the world today have a pro-Europe bias and non-European contributions towards humanity are ignored. This is even true in countries where the subjects of these videos were from. In countries like Pakistan (and many others, viz. Jordan, Egypt, etc.) a cultural elite has been pampered and placed in power who are like zombies in their own societies. They send their children to Europe or North America to learn foreign accents and then try to start their dynastic rules as Messiahs for their "backward" countries. The 20th International Planetarium Society Conference (IPS2010) Abstract: This illustrated talk will focus on the role that was played by the Arabic/Islamic astronomical tradition in critiquing the more ancient Greek tradition, not because this earlier tradition was simply Greek but because it was found to have violated the very scientific principles it claimed to have been based upon. In a systematic and exhaustive manner, almost every parameter upon which the Greek astronomical tradition was based was subjected to a very thorough scrutiny. Whether it was the inclination of the ecliptic, the position of the solar apogee, the rate of precession, the solar eccentricity, the solar equation, or the more complex planetary motions, each and every one of those fundamental concepts were found to be poorly articulated in the Greek tradition. The critique even encompassed the very methodology and the instruments and the manner in which those methods and instruments were used in the Greek tradition to determine the fundamental astronomical parameters in that tradition. The Milesian school was where ancient Greek philosophy began. For this reason alone it would be worthy of study and rememberance, but that would be to neglect the other contributions it has made to history and, as a result, the modern day. The primary philosophers of this school (Thales, Anaximander & Anaximenes) advanced astronomy dramatically and theorised on what constituted all things - one of the main functions of the scientific field of physics. Unfortunately, the bias has always been against giving no credit whatsoever to the Indian mind. For instance, I was taught in school that the numerals we use are "Arabic Numerals". Why? Interesting Facts: * Baudhayana gave the 'Pythagoras theorem' centuries before the Greeks in 800 BC. * Pingala (400 BC) invented the binary number system which is the basic of computer operations. * Indian astronomer, Aryabhatta was the first to have propounded the theory that the earth was a sphere in the 5th century. * Indian astronomer, Brahmagupta, estimated in the 7th century that the circumference of the earth was 5000 yojanas. A yojana is around 7.2 kms. Calculating on this basis we see that the estimate of 36000 kms as the earth's circumference comes quite close to the actual circumference known today.
