Proof of the Prime Number Theorem - Part 1
Gives the slickest proof I know that M(x)/x tends to 0, where M(x) is the sum function of the Moebius function. Part 2 will show that this implies pi(x)(lnx)/x tends to zero (ie pi(x) is about x/ln x), where pi(x) is the number of prime numbers up to x - the prime number theorem. Actually, if you look out for it part 2 is here already (on 1 page -as part 1 is in my personal notes), but I intend to spell it out more like I have here. The method presented is due to Newman, incorporating a modification due to Korevaar. As has become my custom somewhat, there's some quasi-random other material inserted in places (just consider it a data-burst and use your pause button if something catches your eye). This video took me a day solid to create - so naturally I ended up playing with some of the features available in Windows Movie Maker (skills which I hope will aid me in my efforts to edit all sorts of .avis of other stuff that has been sat around for months awaiting my attention). The frames demonstrating classical elliptical geometry represent the progress I made the other night on a video I'm meaning to do: quick way to Kepler's laws for an inverse-square acceleration law. They were done in Borland C++ and captured using "Snarf" (which is a little bit quicker than what I used to do for each frame: edit, select, ctrl-c, open paint, ctrl-v, save, type filename) Watch this space. I keep trying to get my academic contacts to watch this stuff, but they're always too busy hiding away ...
