An excursion through solar science, science history, and geoclimate with a husband and wife team who revealed some of our sun's most stubborn secrets. E. Walter and Annie S.D. Maunder's work helped in understanding our sun's chemical, electromagnetic and plasma properties. They knew the sun's sunspot migration patterns and its variable, climate-affecting, inactive and active states in short and long time frames. An inactive solar period starting in the mid-17th century lasted approximately 70 years, one that E. Walter Maunder worked hard to make us understand: the Maunder Minimum of c. 1620-1720 (which was posthumously named for him). With ongoing concern over global warming, and the continuing failure to identify root causes driving earth's climatic changes, the Maunders' story outlines how our cyclical sun can alter climate. The work goes on to view the sun-Earth connection in terms of geomagnetic variation and climatic change; contemporary views on the sun's operating mechanisms are explored, and the effects these have on the earth over long and short time scales are pondered. If not a call to widen Earth's climate research to include the sun, this text strives to illustrate how solar causes and effects can influence Earth's climate in ways we must understand in order to enhance solar system research and our well-being.

On Oct 2, 1959, I was a first-year student at Harvard, taking a freshman seminar in astronomy from Prof. Donald H. Menzel, a major eclipse scientist and the director of the Harvard College Observatory. He arranged to borrow an Eastern Airlines plane to take us to totality, high over Marblehead, MA, and out to sea. One overslept, so 11 of us first years were on the plane, along with him and with some other people from the observatory. I was, obviously, inspired to go on in eclipse studies. Among the others in the class were John Leibacher, a solar astronomer who is now the editor of the journal Solar Physics (and from whom I heard yesterday and today about an article just accepted with Greek colleagues about spectra from the 2010 total solar eclipse); Ken Janes, an astronomer at Boston University; and Donald Goldsmith, an astronomer and astronomical educator. At web.williams.edu I have posted maps from USNO showing the path of totality near the US, a photo from Goldsmith showing the shadow, a cartoon-style doodle (the frontispiece of my Ph.D. thesis in 1969) of the type for which Menzel was well known, and links to an article about how this 1959 eclipse in Europe was important to the founding of the current observatory in the Canary Islands and to my article about Menzel and eclipses from the time of the 100th anniversary of his birth. -Jay Pasachoff, December 29, 2011.

Ancient Sumerian texts indicate that the Earth ("Tiamat") was struck by a large planet, which moved it into its present orbit, and created the Moon and the Asteroid Belt. In his books, The Twelfth Planet and The Cosmic Code, Zecharia Sitchin outlines this "celestial battle" as described in the Babylonian text called Enuma elish. The planet "Marduk" (the Sumerian " Nibiru "), as it came into the solar system on its clockwise elliptical course, struck Tiamat, which was moving in its ordained counterclockwise orbit. One of Marduk's satellites struck Tiamat first, followed by two more of Marduk's moons. Then Marduk itself, an enormous planetary body, struck Tiamat, smashing one half of the planet into pieces, which became the Earth's Moon and the "Great Band" (Asteroid Belt). The other half of the planet, which was struck by a smaller moon of Marduk, was moved into a new orbit, along with a chunk of material which became its moon. The new planet was then called "KI," meaning "cleaved one." The Earth's original moons were dispersed, many changing the direction of their orbits. Sitchin has also written in Divine Encounters, the planet where God the creator resides is referred to in the Bible as Olamin, the plural of Olam. The meaning of "olam" in the ancient world was a measure of a really long time, specifically related to the span of time between the periodic disappearance and reappearance of the planet Marduk/Nibiru on its vast 3600 year elliptical orbit. Their findings, published in the Dec. 16 issue of the Physical Review of Letters, were obtained using the Milagro Gamma Ray Observatory, a new detector located near Los Alamos, NM, that allows monitoring of the northern sky on a 24-hour, 7-day-per-week basis. Gamma rays are considered by scientists to be the best probe of cosmic rays outside the solar neighborhood. The research team, which includes nearly 40 physicists, reported that Milagro, positioned at an altitude of 8600 feet in the Jemez Mountains, detected a signal along the galactic equator region and interpreted it as arising from gamma rays with a median energy of 3.5 trillion electron-volts, or 3500 times the mass-energy of a proton.
